Executive Director, Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab

Birnur Aral is the executive director of the Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, where she oversees all Lab tests and applications for the GH Seal, the Green GH Seal and the GH Innovation emblem. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Bogazici University (formerly Robert College and the oldest American College abroad), followed by Master of Engineering and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. She is also working on a post-graduate certificate degree in Sustainability Management at Columbia University. She’s a member of the scientific advisory board for Made Safe, a former judge for the Cosmetic Design Beauty Industry Awards, a mentor to young entrepreneurs and a lead organizer of Good Housekeeping’s annual Raise the Green Bar sustainability summit. She is most proud of her work on investigative pieces like “Is It Safe to Heat Food in Plastic?”, “Is Your Tap Water Safe?” and “Keratin Hair Treatments.” She lives in West New York, NJ, with her husband and two daughters.
